America, Winter 2002 : Grand Canyon, Arizona

Carved by the Colorado river, this deep gorge in northern Arizona is big, and it's grand, and it's all American.

I first arrived at the popular south rim and jumped on the shuttle bus.

No other vehicles are allowed.

It's particularily hard to get a shot of the edge without someone in it.

At the eastern end of the south rim. I love the way the trail just goes right over the edge!

Because of the depth of the canyon, there are only a few place where you can catch a glimpse of the Colardo river.

It has some great sunsets too.

It's a long drive to the north rim, so I stayed overnight in a little town called Page.

The next morning, snow! Hmmm, I wonder what that does for the view at the north rim?

I passed through a pretty little place called Marble Canyon.

It had some good looking rocks.

That's the Colorado river again.

The closer I got to the north rim, the heavier the snow.

Great! Too much snow.
The road is blocked.

The locals said it would be sometime tomorrow before it was cleared.

Zoom
Well, at least the flowers were pretty.

This is as close as I got to the north rim.

It's about 60km directly south from here.

Nothing else to do, but head to Zion National Park in Utah.

On the way there I came across Glen Canyon which afforded this spectacular view.
