America, Winter 2002 : Hoover Dam, Nevada

Hoover dam is just outside of Las Vegas on the Arizona border. It dams the Colorado river.

It was built in 1930s to stop flooding in the lower part of the river. It was of unprecedented height and weight, but now it doesn't make it into the top twenty. My guidebook says that to some people it's just a dam, and to others it's the best nongambling attraction in Nevada. Both views are right.

It's got these nice art deco buildings on the upstream side.
